Beau Rivage Beach
  (Promenade des Anglais, Nice. Tel. 04 9247 8282) Classy beach-restaurant with an idyllic view of the Bay of Angels. Lounge bar and theme evenings with DJ, live jazz, salsa and Afro nights.

BienVenue
  (5 Place Saint-François, Nice. Tel. 04 9379 8440) Anglo-French bar/restaurant in the Old Town run by Jon and David South. Vaulted ceilings and comfy sofas create the perfect environment for cocktails, snacks or a three-course meal. Quality cuisine, plus fish and chips on Fridays, and the best Sunday roast in Nice.

Blue Beach
  (32 Promenade des Anglais, Nice. Tel. 04 9387 1036) Private beach which invites you to spend a heavenly day in the sun by the sea. A beach mattress and parasol costs about €17, lunch is very reasonable and families are welcome.

Café Lenôtre
  (1 Promenade des Anglais, Nice. Tel. 04 9388 1390) Delectable food in a prime location facing the sea. Breakfast and afternoon tea includes the famous Lenôtre pastries, plus there are exotic salads, daily specials and a weekday Chrono-Café set meal at €24.50. Open daily, 10am to 7pm.

Delizie
  (9 Rue Buttura, Cannes. Tel. 04 9338 9317) Cheerful Italian trattoria with specialities from the region of Puglia (lasagna, carbonara, parmigiana, rice with mussels, stuffed calamari and more). And the menus at Delizie are very reasonably priced, ranging from €9-€29. Open daily except Sundays.

Entre Cour et Jardin
  (102 Montée de la Bourgade, Le Haut de Cagne. Tel. 049 320 7227) Sample the dishes created by young chef Carl Grineiser, at this intimate garden restaurant. Try the lamb and rosemary flavoured potatoes.

Grand Café de Turin
  (5 Pace Garibaldi, Nice. Tel. 04 9362 2952) A venerable institution dedicated to seafood. Simple décor and a lively atmosphere.

Grand Café des Arts
  (Place Yves Klein, Nice. Tel. 04 9380 5858) Warm and lively restaurant in the town centre for Niçois cuisine with a gastronomic spin. The well-known chef, and the delicious regional produce, attract a loyal local clientele.

L'Allegro
  (4 Place Guynemer. Tel. 04 9356 6206) Long-established Italian restaurant near the port. Trompe-l'oeil frescos and columns serve as a cheerful backcloth for Piedmontese polenta, carpaccio, risotto with squid-ink, pasta and chocolatino. Menus from €19, including a winter menu with wines by the glass.

L'Aqua Bar
  (Grand Hôtel Aston, 12 Avenue Félix-Faure. Tel. 04 9217 5300) On the hotel's seventh floor, with rooftop pool and terrace, this cosmopolitan lounge/restaurant overlooks Masséna Gardens, with great views of the Old Town of Nice and out to sea. Mediterranean cuisine features on L'Aqua Bar's menus, priced from €21.
