On the ground
Shop
Ulica Nowy Swiat is Warsaw’s version of New York City’s Fifth Avenue—the difference being that some of the shops are actually affordable. Spend an afternoon browsing the shop windows, where you can find everything from ‘Baltic gold’ (amber) to the latest European fashions.
Insider Tip
If you’re short on time— or if planning your own sightseeing excursion is too much of a hassle—try the guys at Tours Warsaw (www.tours-warsaw.com). They can organise anything from a quick trip around the Old Town to a gourmet dining tour or an introduction to sights that are off the beaten path.
Key Area
The Mokotów district is where you’ll find Warsaw’s famous Lazienki Park, as well as some beautifully restored palaces that now mostly host foreign embassies. Galeria Mokotów, a large modern shopping centre, has dozens of shops as well as a cinema.
This month
May brings a handful of concerts to Warsaw’s stages. On the classical side, the Warsaw Philharmonic presents a concert of 18th-century music (Tuesday 6 May) and Chopin (Thursday 15). Then, KoRn frontman Jonathan Davis performs solo on the 20th at Stodola Club (Tuesday 20. Ulica Batorego 10), followed by PJ Harvey at the Palace of Culture (Wednesday 21).
Day Tripping
Toruń
 – The birthplace of astronomer Nicolas Copernicus, the medieval town of Toruń features a picturesque Old Town that is on the UNESCO World Heritage list, and the ruins of the 13th-century Castle of the Teutonic Knights.
No way!
Warsaw's Winnie the Pooh Street (Ulica Kubusia Puchatka) is marked by a plaque that depicts the famous stuffed bear and his piglet friend.
