(Kraj Svetog Ivana. Tel. 021 346 205) Just outside the palace, this unpretentious restaurant is a good spot for a simple one-dish meal washed down with a cold beer.
(7 Dioklecijanova. Tel. 021 345 015) As atmospheric a venue for a pizza as you could want. Dine with the ghosts of Roman legionnaires in this grand courtyard within Diocletian's Palace.
(4 Sredmanuska. Tel. 021 347 397) It's no longer just a locals' haunt, but this tourist-orientated restaurant still serves appealing meat and seafood grills, so settle in for a Dalmatian treat with few frills.
(5 Hotel Peristil, Poljana Kraljice Jelene. Tel. 021 329 070) A cut above the normal restaurant-hotel, Tifani enjoys a prime location at the core of Diocletian's Palace. Snare a seat on the terrace and order some first-rate white fish.
(18 Riva. Tel. 021 343 796) Take a pew for some serious people-watching on the second floor of this café/bar. Set into the walls of the Palace, the terrace opens up a bird's-eye view of the posing parade on the Riva.
(Trg Gaje Bulata. Tel. 021 585 999) This ornate building is impressive in itself, but also look out for some decent classical concerts by domestic and international performers (www.hnk-split.hr).
(1 Dosud. Tel. ) Head inside the palace and seek out the trendy haunt on the steps leading up to the little-known second tier of the palace. A hip place for local hipsters and savvy visitors.
On the ground
Shop
Splitski Suvenir is a one-stop souvenir shop that's ideal if you aren't keen to waste time trawling the city to find presents for friends and family (1 Frane Bulica).
Insider Tip
Savour some sladoled: Croatians love their ice cream and in Split you'll realise why. Arguably, Kuca Sladoleda Ivona (25 Riva) serves the best ice cream in town—and that's saying something!
Key Area
Diocletian's Palace is the heart of the city, physically, historically and spiritually. The best plan is to just wander around the old streets, treading in the footsteps of the ancient Romans, taking it all in.
This month
Whether or not you are religious, you can still join the locals in celebrating the local holiday dedicated to St Domnius on 7 May. Not just the churches are busy—bars, cafés and restaurants bustle, too.
Day Tripping
Trogir
–
The gorgeous little island city of Trogir is just an hour's bus ride to the north, but well worth the trip for its chocolate-box beauty and great seafood restaurants. Don't miss the impressive cathedral.
No way!
The funky floodlit Riva that you see today did not appear without its fair share of controversy. The biggest revamp to the waterfront in centuries split Split down the middle, with the more extreme critics demanding it be pulled down and started again.
