Shop
Sardinia has a history of creating gorgeous jewellery due to the wealth of minerals on the island. Sardartis offers beautiful designs, both new and antique (Tel. 0789 66933).
Insider Tip
Why not sample a bottle of Cannonau with dinner? It's a strong red wine and very popular in Sardinia.
Key Area
The water between Tavolara and Molara Islands is fascinating, with its aquatic habitat of gorgonias, big sponges and black coral. Charter a boat and see for yourself.
This month
Olbia's most beautiful church, San Simplicio holds a religious festival this month, which culminates in everyone eating local mussels. Unsurprisingly, it's known as the Festival of Mussels (12-15 May).
Day Tripping
Santa Teresa di Gallura
 – Just 60 kilometres from Olbia, this town has beautiful beaches, shops and restaurants, as well as a wellness centre offering a hammam, Roman baths and sauna (www.termedelporto.com).
No way!
The first first traces of humankind on Sardinia dates back to between 500,000-10,000BC.
