On the ground
Shop
Art Chiaja is tucked away on a tiny plaza off of the Via Chiaia shopping street, where you'll find a wide array of high-quality, Neapolitan souvenirs: coral jewellery, dainty cameos, painted tambourines, Pulcinella figurines, cornicelli (good luck horns) and more (238 Via Chiaia. Tel. 081 497 6222).
Insider Tip
Need stamps? Don’t bother looking for a post office. Simply pop into the nearest tobacco shop and ask for as many francobolli as you require.
Key Area
UNESCO declared Naples' historic city centre a World Heritage site in 1995. Dating back to the original Greek settlement, destroyed in 470, many of Naples' must-see sites are located here, including the Santa Chiara cloister garden.
This month
The MADRE museum features Robert Rauschenberg: Travelling 70-76 Naples, a special selection of the American artist’s works chosen to reflect the influence other cultures had on his artwork (until 19 January. 79 Via L Settembrini. Tel. 081 1931 3016).
Day Tripping
Herculaneum
 – Like Pompeii, this ancient Roman village was also destroyed by the eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 79 AD. A short walk from the Ercolana/Scavi exit on the Circumvesuviana train line leads you to this historical site.
No way!
Italians hang stockings on 5 January, when the good witch known as La Befana flies around on her broom doling out toys and sweets to kids.
