Taxi :
A journey to the centre of town costs about €20 and takes 15 minutes.
Bus :
Take the shuttle bus to Place de l´Europe, from there you can take a tram into the heart of town. The two tram lines run every few minutes. Tickets: €4.90 single; €5.40, including the tram. The journey takes 15 minutes.

Sister's Café
(3 Rue des Soeurs Noires, Centre Historique . Tel. 04 6766 1595) Perfect for a well-cooked lunch, enjoy caramelised pork, quiches and fabulous cakes. Don't let your toddlers miss the box of toys beside the cash desk.
Le Pastis
(3 Rue du Terral, Centre Historique. Tel. 04 6766 3726) Pale stone walls, wooden tables and passionate cooking make this a reliable treat. Menus, from €32, are modern French and rely heavily on fresh seasonal ingredients.
Restaurant Cellier-Morel
(Maison de la Lozère, 27 Rue de l'Aiguillerie, Centre Historique. Tel. 04 6766 4636) The dishes are is beautifully crafted and made with passion. Try to get a table in the courtyard. While you're at it, why not push the boat out and order the set menu at €63?

Le Macadam Pub
(1 Rue des Deux Ponts. Tel. 04 6764 3709) Eclectic music, performance art and arty happenings keep this staple packed night after night. Toss a coin for a free half during happy hour (6pm-8pm). It's near the train station.
Le Fizz
(4 Rue Cauzit, Centre Historique. Tel. 04 6766 2289) A young international crowd crams into this vaulted cellar club at the weekend.

Insider Tip
Tam Vélo rents bicycles at the giveaway price of €1 for for hours and €2 for a day. Take ID and be prepared to leave a deposit of €150 (27 Rue Maguelone. Tel. 04 6722 8782).
Key Area
Just off the Place de la Comédie is the Champ de Mars, a beautiful tree-lined boulevard leading to the Musée Fabre and Corum. Daily market, ice-cream parlours, merry-go-rounds, flower gardens and a giant chess board.
This month
La Comédie du Livre is a festival of books and comic strips. Hundreds of writers, illustrators, editors and bookshops sett up their stands in the Place de la Comédie (30 May-1 June. Tel. 04 6710 9208. www.comediedulivre.montpellier.fr, French only).

Just 90 minutes away by train, this is a must-see. The famous walled city is stunningly beautiful and relatively uncrowded in May. Treat yourself to lunch in a shady square before a stroll around the battlements.
