Insider Tip
A favourite local dish is lapas a la plancha (grilled limpets), usually served on the iron griddle in which they were cooked, with traditional Canarian mojo sauce. Try it at one of the small fish restaurants in El Golfo, Arieta or Orzola.
Key Area
Playa Blanca's up-market marina offers an abundance of restaurants, cafés, bars and designer shops in a tasteful setting that pays homage to Lanzarote's traditional architecture.
This month
IronMan Lanzarote is regarded as the world's toughest ironman challenge. This gruelling event consists of a 3.8-kilometre swim, followed by a 180-kilometre bike ride and finally a 42.2-kilometre run, all under Lanzarote's unrelenting hot sun (24 May. www.ironmanlanzarote.com).
Day Tripping
Fuerteventura
 – Lanzarote's neighbouring island is just a 20-minute ferry ride from Playa Blanca. It boasts the best beaches in the Canary Islands and spectacular sand dunes just outside Corralejo.
No way!
Legend has it that the village of Mancha Blanca was saved from destruction by the Virgen de los Dolores during the 19th-century volcanic eruptions. The villagers carried the statue of the Virgin Mary to the edge of the approaching lava, that threatened to engulf the village, and promised to build a church in her honour in return for their salvation. The lava duly stopped at the site of the present-day church.
