Insider Tip
It takes about 40 minutes by train (Tickets: €3. www.trenitalia.it) to Catanzaro, Calabria's capital. There's plenty to do in Catanzaro Lido, but for the old city on a hill, take the funicolare.
Key Area
The old Sambiase area was named after a 10th-century monastery honouring St Blaise, and its religious heritage is still strong, with five out of 15 churches remaining. The newly refurbished Politeama hosts art exhibitions and cultural events.
This month
At Palazzo Fazzari, in Catanzaro, you can trace the city's history and tradition in textiles, especially silk, at Tessere l'Arte. Entry is free (24-27 November).
Day Tripping

No way!
