Insider Tip
There are many shops in Hurghada and competition is fierce. But it's all part of the fun to haggle, barter and chat. If you want a hassle-free stroll, just tell the guys touting for business that you are 'staff'—they’ll think you work in Hurghada and leave you alone!
Key Area
Head to Sakalla, the hub of tourist activity. A stroll along the two-lane Sheraton Road will bring you a taste of pretty much everything Hurghada has to offer. Coffee shops abound, so settle in at Masrabia and enjoy a shisha (water pipe) with the locals.
This month
This month sees the start of the whale shark season in the Red Sea. With the “biggest smile on the planet”, this creature, up to 12 metres long, is the gentle giant of the ocean, eating plankton (mainly) and often happy to playfully interact with snorkellers and divers.
Day Tripping
El Gouna
–
Just 25 kilometres north of Hurghada, this tourist development is now a town in its own right. Enjoy the Tamr Henna area of shops, cafés and restaurants, or soak up the Mediterranean atmosphere by the luxury yachts in the Abu Tig Marina.
No way!
Only 20 years ago, Hurghada was a sleepy little fishing village. Now it has more than one million visitors a year, 40,000 inhabitants and 150 hotels.
